Athens

This is the Philopappos monument that is located at the top of the Hill of Muses in Athens. Philopappos, who the monument was named after and dedicated to, was a Roman prince who was of Greek decent and who lived in Athens after his exile from Rome. The architecture of the monument reflects his dual cultural heritage, because it has both Greek and Roman aspects to it. For example the poses of the figures and the writing are Greek. The togas that the figures are wearing are Roman. It also has columns which are Greek, but the arches are Roman.

This was the site we went to visit on the first day of our program. After hiking up the hill, which was much harder than we were led to believe, we came to spot on the hill where this monument was at. Even though the monument is a site to behold, the view from the top of the hill was breathtaking. The photo that is on the home page at the very top is the view of the city from the top of the hill of Muses where this monument is located. Tell me that isn't an amazing view!
