Thermopylae

This is a picture of a modern monument laid in 1955 at the site of Thermopylae. Thermopylae is the place where the famous 300 Spartans made their last stand against the Persians. The stone monument translates roughly to "Go tell the Spartans that here we lie, obedient to their laws". Even to this day the Greeks take pride in the courage and sacrifice of their ancestors.

This was one of my favorite battle grounds that we visited, because I am such a fan of the movie 300 which is Hollywood's adoption of the actual battle at Thermopylae that took place during the Persian Wars. The movie does get some things right, although it does take its creative liberties. Now that I know the actual history I think it is so much fun to watch movie adaptions of historical events and compare them to the actual event. No matter how inaccurate the movie 300 might be, I still love it!
